Medical SEO for Practices, Clinics and Health Systems
Medical SEO is the work of getting a practice, clinic or health system found when patients search for a condition, a treatment, a provider or a location near them. It covers provider and location pages, Google Business Profile, medically reviewed content, schema and AI answers, all measured without letting patient data leak into analytics. Cesar Soto, who leads CFS Marketing, did this work in-house as SEO Specialist at a hospital network, where he optimized 2,000+ Google Business Profile locations.

CFS Marketing is a senior-led SEO, AI search and Google Ads consultancy founded by Cesar Soto in 2022, serving growth-focused businesses from Irving, Texas. 01
What is medical SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?
Medical SEO is search engine optimization for healthcare organizations, and it differs from regular SEO in three ways: the content is held to a higher trust standard, the local footprint is larger, and the tracking has privacy limits most industries never face.
- Trust standard. Google treats health information as "Your Money or Your Life" content, where weak or unreviewed pages can cause real harm. Its guidance on creating helpful, reliable content asks who wrote a page and what experience they bring.
- Local footprint. A single health system can have hundreds of locations, departments and providers, each needing its own search listing.
- Privacy. A page about a condition, joined to a visitor's identity, can be health information. Measurement has to be designed around that.
Healthcare search engine marketing is the wider term: organic SEO plus paid search. Most of this page covers SEO. The section on Google Ads near the end explains where paid fits.
02
How should provider and location pages be built?
Provider and location pages should each answer the questions a patient asks before booking, in a consistent structure that search engines can read at scale. These are the pages that usually decide whether a search turns into an appointment.
| Page type | What it needs |
|---|---|
| Provider page | Full name and credentials, specialties, board certifications, languages, locations where they see patients, insurance accepted, whether they take new patients, a booking path, and a short bio in plain language |
| Location page | Exact name, address and phone matching the Google Business Profile, hours, services offered at that site, providers at that site, parking and access notes, a map, and booking |
| Service or condition page | What the condition or treatment is, who it helps, what a visit involves, which providers and locations offer it, reviewed by a named clinician |
Three rules we hold to:
- One page per real entity. A provider who sees patients at three clinics gets one provider page that lists all three, not three thin copies.
- Templates with real fields, not filler. At scale, pages are built from structured data (the provider directory or credentialing system), so updates flow through instead of being retyped.
- Internal links that follow the patient. Condition pages link to the providers who treat it; provider pages link to their locations; location pages link back to services.
03
How do you manage Google Business Profile across hundreds of locations?
You manage Google Business Profile at scale with a single source of truth for location data, a naming convention that follows Google's rules, and a listings platform or bulk process that pushes changes everywhere at once. As in-house SEO Specialist at a hospital network from 2019 to 2020, Cesar optimized 2,000+ Google Business Profile locations, set up 200 new listings and managed 500 locations through Yext.
What that work teaches:
- Know which profiles Google allows. Google's guidelines for representing your business let hospital departments have their own profiles when they operate as distinct entities, with names different from the main hospital. Individual practitioners can also have profiles, and at a shared location the profile name should be the practitioner's name only.
- Practitioner profiles need ownership. Physicians leave, retire and move. Claim and manage their profiles so a departed doctor's listing doesn't keep sending patients to the wrong place.
- Categories and services drive discovery. The primary category, secondary categories and services list should match what each site actually offers.
- Hours change more than you think. Holiday hours, urgent care hours and lab hours are where listings go stale first.
- Bulk tools need governance. A listings platform like Yext saves time, but someone still has to own the data feeding it and check that it went out correctly.
Why does NAP consistency matter for healthcare?
Name, address and phone (NAP) consistency matters because patients act on the phone number and address they see, and search engines use matching details across sites to confirm a location is real. In healthcare, the same building often appears under the hospital name, the clinic name, the department name and several provider names. We audit those variations across your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, insurer directories and major health directories, then fix the source data first so the corrections hold.

How do YMYL and E-E-A-T apply to medical content?
YMYL and E-E-A-T apply to medical content by raising the bar on who writes it, who reviews it and how clearly that is shown. E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, the qualities Google's guidance says its systems look for. For health topics, that means:
- Named clinical review. Every condition and treatment page carries "Medically reviewed by" with the clinician's name, credentials and a link to their provider page.
- Author credentials. Writers are named, and their bios state what they know and how.
- Review dates. Pages show when they were last reviewed, and we keep a schedule so they actually get reviewed again.
- Sources. Claims about outcomes, risks and statistics link to primary sources such as peer-reviewed research or government health agencies.
- No overpromising. Pages describe what a treatment involves and who it suits. They don't promise outcomes.
Your clinicians stay in charge of the medicine. We handle the search structure, the drafts if you want them, and the workflow that gets pages reviewed without stalling.
05
Which schema markup should a medical website use?
A medical website should use schema markup that describes its real entities: MedicalOrganization or a more specific type such as Hospital or MedicalClinic for the organization and each location, and Physician for provider pages. These types are defined at schema.org/MedicalOrganization and schema.org/Physician.
How we use it:
- Organization: name, logo, URL, social profiles and
sameAslinks to your official listings. - Locations: address, geo coordinates, phone, opening hours and the department or specialty, with each location tied back to the parent organization.
- Providers: name, medical specialty, the locations where they practice, and accepted insurance where your data supports it.
- Pages:
WebPagewithreviewedByandlastReviewedon medical content, matching what the page visibly shows.
Schema only describes what is on the page. It doesn't guarantee rich results, and markup that claims things the page doesn't show can cause problems, so we keep the two in sync.
06
How do you track SEO results without exposing patient data?
You track medical SEO results by measuring actions such as calls, booking clicks and completed forms, while keeping protected health information (PHI) out of analytics and ad platforms entirely. This is where healthcare tracking needs the most care.
Our rules:
- No PHI in Google Analytics. Google states that it does not offer Business Associate Agreements for Google Analytics and advises HIPAA-regulated customers not to place tags on authenticated pages or on pages tied to health care services in ways that give Google access to PHI.
- No PHI in ad platforms. We don't send names, emails, phone numbers, conditions or appointment details to Google Ads, Meta or any other ad platform.
- Forms on compliant tools. Intake and appointment forms run on platforms that will sign a Business Associate Agreement with you. Analytics records that a form was submitted, never what was in it.
- Careful URLs and events. Page paths, event names and parameters must not carry a condition plus anything that identifies the visitor.
- Your counsel decides. The US Department of Health and Human Services has issued guidance on online tracking technologies, and part of it was vacated by a federal court in 2024. We design tracking conservatively and your privacy or compliance lead approves it.
Our GA4 and conversion tracking page covers the general audit process. In healthcare we add the privacy review on top.
07
How do medical practices show up in AI answers?
Medical practices give themselves the best chance of showing up in AI answers, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, when their own pages state clear, quotable facts and the rest of the web agrees with them. Patients ask these tools which clinics treat a condition nearby, which doctors take their insurance, and what a procedure involves.
What helps:
- Answer-first sections. Each condition and service page opens with a short, direct answer that a model can lift as written.
- Consistent entity data. The same names, specialties, locations and insurance details across your site, Google Business Profile and health directories.
- Reviewed, sourced content. The same E-E-A-T work above makes your pages safer for an AI system to cite.
- Crawler access. Make sure your site isn't blocking the crawlers that AI search tools use, unless you've decided to.
We can't promise any AI tool will recommend you. We can measure where you appear today and fix what keeps you out. Our answer engine optimization page and AI Visibility Audit explain the method.

Where does Google Ads fit in healthcare search engine marketing?
Google Ads fits in healthcare search engine marketing as the fast, controllable layer on top of SEO: it puts a service line in front of patients while organic pages are still building. Two healthcare limits shape every campaign:
- Restricted targeting. Health is a sensitive category under Google's personalized advertising policy, so advertiser-built audiences (including remarketing lists) can't be used to promote health services.
- Healthcare ad policy. Google's healthcare and medicines policy requires certification for some categories, such as online pharmacies, telemedicine providers and addiction services.
Campaigns are built on search intent instead: service, specialty and location keywords, with conversions counted without patient data. See our Google Ads consultant page for how we run accounts.

What does the first 90 days of medical SEO look like?
The first 90 days of medical SEO with CFS Marketing go to the groundwork everything else builds on: audit, fixes and page templates.
- Days 1 to 30: audit. Technical crawl, provider and location page inventory, Google Business Profile and listings audit, NAP check across major sources, tracking and privacy review, and an AI answer check for your core services.
- Days 31 to 60: fix the base. Correct listing data at the source, fix technical errors, set up compliant conversion tracking, and agree on page templates for providers and locations.
- Days 61 to 90: build. Roll out improved provider and location pages, start the medical review workflow for condition and service pages, and add schema.
You get a written plan at day 30 and a progress report each month after that, in leads and booked appointments where you can share them, not just rankings.
10
Who runs the work, and who is it a fit for?
Cesar Soto runs the work himself. He has done independent client work since 2013, founded CFS Marketing in 2022, and is certified in Google Ads Search and Google Analytics 4. His healthcare experience comes from his in-house role as SEO Specialist at a hospital network, managing Google Business Profile and listings at the scale described above.
We don't have a published client case study in healthcare yet. We bring direct experience with multi-location healthcare listings, plus the same tracking-first method we use in every industry.
You are likely a fit if:
- You have several locations or providers, or plan to.
- Your listings, provider pages or tracking are out of date or inconsistent.
- You have a clinician who can review medical content, and someone who can approve privacy decisions.
If you run a mental health practice or a treatment center, see our pages on behavioral health marketing and addiction treatment marketing. The full healthcare overview covers every sub-specialty we serve.
11
What does medical SEO cost with CFS Marketing?
Work runs on a monthly retainer scoped to the channels and fixes you need, with ad spend billed separately. Cesar quotes after reviewing your accounts. A five-location clinic and a 200-location health system need very different scopes, so we don't publish a single price.

Get my custom planWhat is medical SEO?
Medical SEO is search engine optimization for healthcare organizations. It helps practices, clinics and health systems appear when patients search for conditions, treatments, providers and nearby locations, while holding content to a higher trust standard and keeping patient data out of analytics.
How long does medical SEO take to work?
Listing and technical fixes are the quickest work to ship, while new provider, location and condition pages usually take months to earn rankings, depending on competition. CFS Marketing spends the first 90 days on audit, fixes and templates, then reports monthly on leads and appointments.
Is Google Analytics HIPAA compliant?
Google says it does not offer Business Associate Agreements for Google Analytics and advises HIPAA-regulated organizations not to send it protected health information. CFS Marketing sets up analytics to record actions, never patient details, and your compliance lead approves the setup.
Should each doctor have a Google Business Profile?
Google allows individual practitioners to have their own Business Profiles, and at a shared location the profile name should be the practitioner's name only. Whether each doctor should have one depends on how patients search for your providers and whether you can keep those profiles managed when providers leave.
What schema should a medical practice use?
A medical practice should use MedicalOrganization or a more specific type such as MedicalClinic for the organization and its locations, and Physician for provider pages. The markup should only describe what each page visibly shows.
Can you guarantee first-page rankings for my practice?
No. CFS Marketing does not guarantee rankings, patient volume or AI recommendations, because search engines decide those. We commit to clean data, compliant tracking, a written plan and monthly reports in your numbers.
